Abram becomes Abraham (Genesis 17)
Reading to Your Kids......
The last time we talked about Abram he was 86 years old. God had promised him that he would have a son and have many descendants - as many stars as are in the sky. Well, the next time we hear about God talking to Abram was when he was 99 years old! That's a long time to wait and have nothing happen that God promised! When Abram was 99 years old, God appeared and said to him, "I am God Almighty; walk before Me and be blameless. I will make a promise to you and I will multiply you exceedingly." Abram fell down the the ground and hid his face when God was talking to him. God said, "You will the the father of many nations. No longer will your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham for I will make you the father of many nations. Kings will come forth from you. I will make an everlasting promise with you to be your God. As for Sarai your wife, you should not call her Sarai anymore, but Sarah will be her name."
Your Child's Insights....
1. Do you think it was hard for Abram to have not heard from God for 13 years?
2. Do you think Abram might have felt like God forgot about him?
3. Do you ever feel like God has forgotten about you?
Ideas for Prayer with Your Child.....
- Pray that your child would have the patience to wait when it feels like God isn't close.
- Pray that your child would have patience when it feels like God isn't keeping His promises.
- Thank God that He keeps promises in ways that show that He is in charge.
Random Thoughts for Your Consideration.....
- I wonder why God didn't say anything about the fact that Ishmael had even been born and the interactions between Sarai and Haggar and Abram's passivity in that.
